Calvert Crabs, LLC was formed in 2012 and is owned by Robert and Rita Penn of Prince Frederick, MD. Both Robert and Rita grew up crabbing along the waterways of Southern Maryland. Robert is a 3rd Generation Waterman, raised in Cobb Island, MD. As a youth, his days were filled crabbing, fishing, and harvesting oysters with his grandfather – a native of the small island in Charles County. Rita’s aunt had a house in Colton’s Point in St. Mary’s County where she would spend her weekends crabbing off the pier with a string and chicken neck.
After high school, Robert joined the U.S. Army and served during Desert Storm. He pursued a culinary career and worked as an Executive Sous Chef at Blackie’s House of Beef in Washington, DC, Crofton Country Club in Crofton MD, and Asbury Retirement Community.
It has always been our dream to share our love of Southern Maryland seafood with others – especially blue crab, oysters, and rockfish.
It is our goal to bring families fresh and local crabs, produce, and seasonal seafood to keep the Southern Maryland tradition of fresh seafood alive for our grandchildren and future generations.
